A proper skincare routine is important for a healthy and radiant skin. Being a student of the university and not being able to follow extensive 9-step skincare routines. I was looking for a simple yet effective skincare routine for healthy and glowing skin.

After going through dozens of studies and talking to my Dermatologist, I came to the conclusion

that an effective skincare routine can be divided into 3 simple steps.

  • Cleaning -Wash your Face
  • Treating
  • Moisturize

You may have probably heard about cleaning and moisturizing, but treating your skin is the most important part of any skincare routine. Treating includes using sunscreen, exfoliating, and applying different serums depending on the condition of your skin.

Let’s dive into each of them step by step.

The first step of any good skincare routine should be cleaning. Cleaning helps remove any surface debris, and in the evening, it is especially crucial because it helps remove any makeup, sunscreen, or any pollutants your skin may have encountered throughout the day.

First of all, you should wash your face with lukewarm water. It will help loosen any surface debris and make cleansing more effective.

Secondly, apply a mild, sulfate-free cleanser and massage it gently with the tips of your fingers.

After about 20-30 seconds, rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water and gently pat your face dry with a clean and soft towel and avoid rubbing as it can cause irritation.

Pick a cleaner that matches your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive, or combination).

Try to avoid harsh soaps because they can strip your skin of natural oils and lead to dryness or irritation.

After cleaning, you can also use a Toner. Toners serve various purposes in a skincare routine, depending on which type of toner you use. Some common purposes include balancing the skin’s pH, removing any remaining traces of impurities after cleansing, and providing hydration.

Sunscreen: The UV rays of the sun can be very harmful to your skin and can even cause premature ageing and skin damage. So, in the morning, after applying moisturizer, you should apply a generous amount of sunscreen on your face, neck, and any exposed skin areas. Apply sunscreen after every 2 hours if you are outside.

Choose a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and broad-spectrum protection to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

Exfoliating: Exfoliants remove any gunk or grime that can build up on your skin over time. They remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh, smoother, and more radiant skin from underneath.

Try exfoliating 1-2 times every week.

There are many types of exfoliants out there, which include scrubs, Glycolic acid, Alpha hydroxy acid, baking soda, and many more.

Anti-ageing product: You should include an anti-ageing product to help prevent wear and tear generated by environmental aggressors.

Serums: If you have specific skincare concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, or fine lines, consider adding a serum with active ingredients after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Your skin loses moisture throughout the day, which can cause your skin to be more prone to the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and all sorts of skin problems. Long-term moisture loss can contribute to premature ageing of the skin. Try to choose a moisturizer that best suits your skin type.

Dry skin- get a moisturizer that is hydrating and rich

Oily skin- Try to get  a lightweight, oil-free, or gel-based moisturizer

Combination skin- use different moisturizers on different parts of your face

Sensitive Skin- Look for moisturizers labelled “hypoallergenic” or “for sensitive skin.

Apply the moisturizer gently and let it be absorbed into the skin for 2-3 mins before applying anything else.

Change does not happen overnight. Any skincare routine and even the best skin care product needs time to show its effects. The most important part of any skincare regimen is consistency. So you should try it for at least 2 weeks before making any judgments.
